October 1991

Several weeks ago, we resumed a study of the book of Psalms in the Wednesday night Bible study. Though I have read the Psalms many times, I was challenged anew by their wonderful teaching concerning the majesty and love of God. Perhaps no other chapter shows this forth as much as Psalm 27. David writes in verse I and says
"The Lord is my light, and my salvation... the Lord is the strength of my life..."
What a marvelous picture of God's ability! God is my only means of seeing. He is light not only to all, but specifically to me, He will always lead me in the proper way. He is my salvation. He and He alone is able to save me through the blood of Jesus Christ, and He has done it! He is my strength. God's power and majesty are not simply there for His benefit, but for mine as well. He will give me all the strength that I need to face the burden, challenges, and decisions of tomorrow.

Having said this David asks "of whom shall I be afraid?" Indeed, whom should the child of God fear? We are commanded to fear the Lord, for this is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. But, should the believer fear his circumstances? Should he fear that which may arise tomorrow? Should he fear illness of poverty? Should he fear perhaps loneliness? In verse 10, David writes "when my father and mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." Even in the time of greatest crisis and need, God will be there to carry us on in the battle.

What then is David's conclusion? "Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart." Like David of old, let each of us see the glory and power of God, even through the shadows of life, and trust Him to supply all our nee.
