"And He (Jesus) said unto them, come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while." (Mark 6:31)
As we come to the end of the summer months, many are planning to get their vacations in. some will head for the water; others will go towards the mountains. Some will simply visit family members wherever they may be. Regardless of which of these trips we take, it is necessary to take a break sometimes. A pastor once said, "if we don't take time to 'come apart', them we are going to come apart!" How right he was! I hope as you vacation this month, that you will have an enjoyable time, and that you will get the rest that you need.
As we think of vacations and rest, I cannot help but think of Hebrews 4. In this chapter, God tells His people about God's rest. The Jews understood the idea of resting on the Sabbath day. The also understood that rest that Israel had when they finally entered the Promised Land. But God tells them of a greater rest - Heavenly Rest. Vacations here are wonderful, but they do not compare to the rest that awaits the believer in Heaven. That rest will be undisturbed and unending. No financial concerns or worries about what's going on back home will spoil our rest. What a great blessing that will be.
As you vacation this year, remember God's rest that He has prepared for those who have accepted Christ as Saviour. And once vacation is over, let's each get back to the business of serving God here. Serving the Lord can get tiring, but someday soon we will enter eternal rest.
