"Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only
doeth wondrous things" (Psalm 72:18).
In reading this
verse, I was struck by the fact that it can be taken in
two ways; both of which show the majesty of our God.
First of all, He is the Only One who can do wondrous things. Man has been allowed by God to do some amazing feats. On our recent vacation we rode. to the 80th floor of the Empire State Building, and gazed over the architectural marvel that is New York City. We later
climbed to the crown of another man made wonder: The Statue of Liberty. Truly, it is an artistic and symbolic masterpiece. Yet only God can do the wondrous. We stood at the top of the Empire State Building at approximately 7:30 p.m. The outside walkway was packed as locals and tourists, both American and foreign, gazed out at the city. Yet as the minutes passed, the vast majority began moving to the west side of the building. Why? Because they wanted to see something really wondrous: sunset. Only God could do that. Only God could make the Pocono and Catskill Mountains. Only God could make the eight waterfalls at Bushkill, Pa., or the two giant waterfalls of Niagara. Only God does that which is wondrous.
In addition, this verse indicates that the only things that God does are wondrous things. Our God is not mundane, or common. He is wondrous, and He deals only in the wondrous. Creation is wondrous in its entirety.
When God looked upon it, He saw that it was good. The human body is wondrous; it is "fearfully arid wonderfully made". Salvation is wondrous. The fact that an eternal, holy God would love a wretched sinful man like me and send His Son to die for me is wondrous. That I, born a child of the Devil, could be adopted as a son of God is too marvelous for words. God's care for His children is wondrous. His peace is wondrous. His inerrant Word is wondrous. Heaven is wondrous, and I look forward to the day when I can see my wondrous Saviour there face to face.
Only God can do the wondrous, and He does only wondrous things. This is the God who loves us, and whom we have the privilege of serving. May we rejoice and find our sufficiency in Him today and throughout our
lives.
