February 1996

 previous -------------- next

As February approaches, the thoughts of many turn to Valentine's Day. Children will place tiny notes in special classroom mail boxes, while adults may send a bouquet of flowers or a box of candy to that "special someone." While this is all wonderful, isn't it tragic that for many families demonstrations of love, particularly between spouses, are limited to only certain special holidays.

Those of us who have been blessed with a husband or wife should take time for them, not just on Valentine's Day, but every day. The Bible tells us that

"whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing and obtaineth favor of the Lord" (Proverbs 18:22).
Solomon tells us that the virtuous woman has a price "far above rubies" (Proverbs 31-10). That being the case, why do so many men ignore the needs of their wives, or worse yet, relegate them to the level of a servant? Peter instructs his readers to dwell with their wives "according to knowledge", yet how many men really take the time to know, let alone attempt to understand, their mates? The author of Hebrews tells us that "marriage is honorable in all", yet how few people truly spend time and effort on that most honorable of institutions!

I challenge each of us to give ourselves not only to the Lord in 1996, but also to our mates, take time on a daily basis to spend time alone with your beloved. Don't allow work, chores, or children to become an excuse; just do it. Spend time talking, not just watching television. Tell her that you love her, and how much she truly means to you. Compliment her, encourage her. and find ways to be helpful. Pray with her, and grow in the Lord with her. Ladies, be sure to do these things for your husband as well. It is only through strong Christian homes where both husband and wife love God and each other that we can hope to raise Godly children who will serve the Lord in the years to come.
