December 1992

Once again the Christmas season is upon us.
Stores begin to run their special holiday sales.
Decorative lights appear on homes. A festive
mood descends on much of humanity. Yet for many,
the joy of Christmas will be ended by December 26th. The anticipation of giving and receiving gifts climaxes in a few moments of frenzied unwrapping on Christmas morn, and then it is gone. The beautiful music of the carolers is silenced. In many homes, it is time to put away Christmas for the year. The only evidence that it occurred at all is found in some broken toys, and the monthly statement from the credit card company. What a shame!
You see, for the believer, the joy of Christmas is a never-ending experience. The individual who has repented of sin, and put his faith in the Son of God who was born in Bethlehem's manger, has a joy and peace which is not limited by the season. He has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who leads him in proper paths. He has the Word of God to provide comfort and encouragement. He has a Heavenly Father who is always there to hear his petitions. He has a great High Priest, Jesus Christ, who stands as his Advocate, Mediator, and Intercessor. And he has the knowledge that when this life is over, an eternity of bliss in Heaven awaits.
This holiday season, let us not allow the excitement of the temporal pleasure of Christmas day to overshadow the true joy which is to be found in the Christ of Christmas. "Joy to the world, the Lord is come" does not end with the presents. "Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns" is not a thought which is cast out of the home along with the dead Christmas tree. "He rules the world with truth and grace" is still true December 26th, and every other day of the year. The true peace and joy which is found in the Lord Jesus Christ knows no seasonal boundaries, but is real to the child of God all through the year.
