Today's Pathway:

 I Corinthians 15:21-22
  1. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
  2. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

His Majesty's Service

In today's passage, Paul continues his discussion of the resurrection. He starts with the statement that death exists because of man. We know that when God finished His work of creation on the sixth day, no death had yet occurred. Man had been created, and after that was done God saw everything that He had made and it was "very good" (Genesis 1:31). God would not have pronounced everything that He had made to be "very good" if death had already occurred. According to I Corinthians 15:26, death is an enemy, and a holy God would never call an enemy "good". By the way, the fact that death occurred because of man, and began after the sixth day of creation, proves that evolution can not be true. Evolution requires billions of years, and those years had to be filled with death. The evolutionist believes that it took multiplied millions of years for the smallest of creatures to evolve into humans, and those "ancestors" of humans all died away. Unfortunately, some Christians have tried to reconcile evolution with the Bible. Some claim that each "day" in Genesis 1 is actually an "age" that could take up millions of years. Others place a multi-billion year gap between in Genesis 1:1 and in 1:2. These theories are false, as is the entire theory of evolution. There was no death until after Adam's sin. Paul wrote in in Romans 5:12,

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin".
All of creation was affected by the sin of Adam. This is why Paul writes in Romans 8:22,
"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now."
There were no problems, nor deaths of any kind, before Adam's sin. But because of one man's refusal to obey God, death now exists.

Paul continues in verse 21 that because one man brought death into the world, one Man provides the solution to death. Jesus died because He took upon Himself the sins of the world. But then He rose from the dead, which shows that He has conquered death, and those who put their trust in Him for salvation will also ultimately conquer death when they rise from the dead. Paul phrases verses 21-22 in an interesting way. He talks about being "in" Adam" and being "in" Christ. There are two groups of people in this world today: those who are "in Adam", and those who are "in Christ". All of us start out "in Adam". We are human beings, and we are born with a sin nature that we received because of Adam's sin. When someone gets saved, he is now "in Christ", and has the promise of eternal life and the promise of his own resurrection. Those who reject salvation remain in Adam, and they can only look forward to their own physical death, and then to their eternity in the Lake of Fire, which John refers to as the "second death" (Revelation 20:14).

In John 11 we read about the death of Lazarus. Jesus arrives in Bethany four days after Lazarus has passed away, and has a conversation with Martha. John writes,

"Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live" (John 11:23-25).
Lazarus died because he was a sinner. But because of his faith in Christ, he not only had eternal life, but he was promised a glorious resurrection someday - a resurrection far greater than the one he would get later that day. That day Jesus raised him from the dead, but eventually Lazarus died again. However, someday there will be a resurrection from which Lazarus, and every believer will never die again. I'm looking forward to that day!

Are you still "in Adam", or have you chosen to be "in Christ"?
