Today's Pathway:


 I Corinthians 6:9-11
  1. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
  2. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
  3. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

His Majesty's Service

 Paul concluded his rebuke of the Corinthian church concerning lawsuits by stating that they had been defrauding their brothers in Christ (verse 8). Their wickedness in this matter was not limited to going to secular courts instead of going before the church, but in addition, the reason that these alleged Christians were going to court in the first place was a desire to defraud or steal from their fellow church members. Because they were continually trying to cheat each other, Paul raises this question in verse 9: don't you know that unrighteous people are not going to be a part of God's kingdom? Because of their sinful behavior, Paul calls into question whether or not they had ever truly been saved.

 The verb tense used in describing the defrauding that was going on indicates that this was a regularly occurring event. Obviously, to defraud someone even once is a terrible sin. However, this was not a one-time offense; it was a continual practice. Paul is not questioning the salvation of every individual who commits a sin, even those sins that he is going to list in verse 9-10. However, he is questioning the salvation of people who make those sins a part of their chosen lifestyle. In I John 3:6, the apostle John writes,

"Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him."
The sinning he is speaking of is habitual. People who are continually in rebellion against God are giving evidence that they are unsaved. John continues in verse 8,
"He that committeth sin is of the devil."
This is also a continuous action verb. Then John adds in verse 9,
"Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God"
These verses clearly indicate that those who live godless lives do so because they have never received Christ.

 Beginning in the middle of verse 9, Paul gives a lengthy list of sins that unsaved people commit. He tells the church at Corinth that they should not allow themselves to be deceived into thinking that a person can be a child of God and still live like a child of the devil. As a pastor, many times I have had some Christian tell me about a friend or relative who had no interest in spiritual things and was living a wicked lifestyle. And then the person adds something like this: "So and so said the sinner's prayer when he was younger, so he's saved, but just backslidden, and I'm praying that he comes back to the Lord". This is not what Paul indicates. He says that the people he is about to list shall not inherit the kingdom of God. This doesn't mean that they can never be saved. It means that they still need to be saved!

 Four of the first five sins that Paul lists are sexual sins: fornication, adultery, homosexuality ("abusers of themselves with mankind"), and being effeminate. While the word "effeminate" is normally associated with homosexuality and pedophilia, Bruce Hurt adds this:

"God’s unique creation, those created in His own image, were created “male and female” (Genesis 1:27), and the Lord strictly forbids the two roles to be blurred, much less exchanged. 'The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God' (Deuteronomy 22:5). The Hebrew terms in that verse indicate more than clothing, and include any tool, implement, or apparatus."
This is certainly applicable to the transgender movement that is running rampant in our society today. It also should be noted that, while Christians usually view homosexuality as being wicked (and it is), we often do not view heterosexual immorality the same way. God puts them both on the same list.

 Tomorrow we will look at the remainder of this section. But for today, we need to understand that those who are actively involved in these sinful activities are showing by their lifestyle their true spiritual condition. The immoral do not need "acceptance"; they need Christ.
