Today's Pathway:

 Romans 2:17-24
  1. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
  2. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
  3. And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
  4. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
  5. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
  6. Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
  7. Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
  8. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

 In today's passage Paul returns to his denunciation of the hypocrites, and focuses on the Jews. In verses 17-20 he discusses their accessibility to the Truth. These verses all revolve around the fact that the Jews had been given the Mosaic Law. Look at the statements that Paul makes. They were called Jews, which meant they were God's chosen people. They had been given the Law, and they were resting in that fact. They were boasting about their relationship with God. They knew what the Bible said concerning God's will for their daily lives. They were able to discern ("approve") right from wrong because they had received instruction about the Law. They knew the Law so well that they felt very confident in their ability to teach the Pentateuch to others, particularly to the Gentiles, who they considered to be blind, foolish, and babies.

 Yet in spite of all their knowledge, these Jews were violating the very Law that they reverenced so much and knew so well. John tells us,

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4),
but notice what sins they were committing: theft, adultery, idolatry, and sacrilege. These are very serious issues, and activities that even the most ignorant Jew would know to be wicked. Yet in their hypocrisy they sunk to the level of being involved in these activities.

 The end results of their hypocrisy are seen in verse 23-24. First, they brought dishonor to the Lord. The word "dishonor" means "to treat with indignity, to disgrace or to degrade". Talking about the Bible while not living out the Bible disgraces the Lord Who gave us the Bible. But this problem went even further, for verse 24 says that God's name was blasphemed. This word means, "to speak impiously, to defame, rail on, revile, speak evil.". So, not only were they robbing God of the honor that He deserves, they were causing the heathen nations around them to speak evil against Him. How often have our actions caused those around us to think poorly of the God Who we claim has saved us? The unsaved world knows how Christians are supposed to live. When we blatantly violate the principles of the Word that the ungodly know exist, they come to the conclusion that God really isn't all that important, and He really is unable to change a person's life. I doubt that this is the image of the Lord that we want to convey to those around us.

 Let's not be hypocrites. Let's actually live a life that reflects what we claim to believe.
