Chapter 133
- (A Song of degrees of David.) Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
- It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
- As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

- Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the name of the LORD; praise him, O ye servants of the LORD.
- Ye that stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God,
- Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.
- For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.
- For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.
- Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.
- He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.

Chapter 137
- By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
- We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
- For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
- How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?
- If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
- If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Chapter 138
- (A Psalm of David.) I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.
- I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
- In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
- All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth.
- Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD.

Chapter 139
- (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
- Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
- Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
- For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
- Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
- Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
- Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
- If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
- If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
- Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
- If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
- Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
- For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
- I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
- My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
- Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
- How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
- If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
- Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
- For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
- Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
- I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
- Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
- And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 133:1 gives a most enjoyable thought. It states,
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"
In our day and age we as Christians see opposition on every hand. A man goes to his job and is confronted with ungodliness from the moment he walks in the door. The more godly he attempts to live, the more miserable his co-workers attempt to make him. A young believer goes to a public school and faces jeering from his classmates and perhaps criticism from his teachers because of his Biblical stance. A person with an unsaved spouse or children with unsaved parents may find themselves the object of scorn from even those who are closest to them. However, there ought to be one place where Christians can go where they are accepted and encouraged. This place is with other Christians, and particularly within the local church.
Unfortunately, many church congregations are characterized by an inability to get along with each other. There are disagreements about financial issues, and disagreements about the direction of the church. They fight about who should be the next deacon and whether or not the Mother-Daughter banquet should be held on Friday night or Saturday night. They criticize every decision that is made, and make sure that their displeasure over the pastor's choice of sermon topics is known to all. This is not what Christian brotherhood is supposed to be like.
Christians ought to be able to get along with each other. Please note that I am not suggesting that we should compromise doctrine in order to get along. That false philosophy has been taught by the liberals and new-evangelicals, and is completely false. Paul warns believers to "mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them," (Rom. 16:17). In case someone would think that this principle applies only to separation from the unsaved, the Bible expressly teaches that sometimes we must even separate from our brothers and sisters in Christ II Thes. 3:6 states,
"Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us."
Compromising Biblical truth can never be an option for the child of God.
There is something wonderful about going into the church and greeting friends who believe like you do, live like you do, and have the same goals and desires that you do. Certainly every church member is not going to agree with everything that every other church member thinks or does, but these differences should be minimal between people who read the same Bible and are indwelt by the same Holy Spirit. Minor disagreements will not escalate into full-fledge warfare when people practice brotherly love one towards another (I Thes. 4:9). If serious incidents occur, a Biblical methodology will be employed for solving them and assuring reconciliation. People will be willing to forbear and forgive (Col. 3:13). They will be interested in what their brothers in Christ are doing, and will both weep and rejoice with them (Rom. 12:15). They will not be self-centered, but will dedicate themselves to serving one another (Gal. 5:13-14).
A church like this is a little slice of Heaven, and is a great blessing to those who attend. I believe that it is pleasing to the Lord, and certainly serves as an attraction to those whose church experience has not been all that it could or should have been. The psalmist says that it is like precious ointment and the morning dew (2). It reminds us of the past blessings of God and His promise of eternal life (2). It is a place where God is glorified and His work is being accomplished with an attitude that pleases Him.
Do you attend this kind of church? Are you doing your part to make it this kind of church through you unity with the brethren and your sweet spirit? Church attendance should be pleasant even apart from the teaching, preaching and outreach. Dedicate yourself to being the type of person that you need to be in order to make your church fit this Biblical model.
